I was shown a video which totally stole my heart, on March 31st 2003. It was about a charity called DebRA (Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association). This charity was founded in 1978 and is the only national charity working on behalf of people in the UK with Epidermolysis Bullosa (E.B) where the skin and the internal body linings blister at the slightest, knock or rub.
I have been a volunteer for DebRA for the last 6 years. The charity relys solely on voluntary donations, so I raise much needed funds at every opportunity, getting involved in as many public events as possible.
DebRA is not a very well known charity, so I take part in almost anything that will bring DebRA into the public eye, including carnivals, family days, street collections and taking part in 5 and 10k runs to list just a few.
I have also given presentations, which, before I was involved with DebRA I would have run a mile from. This has proved to me that if something means enough to you and you put time and effort into it you can achieve anything!
My time fund raising for DebRA has given me confidence, satisfaction and a great sense of pride knowing what I do is helping towards giving the people who live with this dreadful condition a chance of a life free of pain.
